Net Metering in the Netherlands: What Changes by 2027 and How to Prepare with XDS Plug in Battery

1) What’s officially decided now

• Phase-out starting 2025 was rejected by the Eerste Kamer on 13 Feb 2024. 

• The government’s new proposal ends net-metering on 1 Jan 2027; consumers will receive a (reasonable) export compensation from their supplier instead of one-to-one netting. Government and public pages now reflect the 2027 end date.

• Implication: In 2025–2026 you still benefit from full net-metering; after 2027, value shifts to using more solar onsite (and timing consumption smartly).

  2) What this means for homeowners & installers

  • Self-consumption > export: Shifting dishwasher/EV/heat-pump to sunny or low-price hours matters more after 2027.

  • Dynamic contracts & batteries: With dynamic tariffs, a home battery can charge at low prices / discharge at high or during peak-tariff windows.

  • Export compensation: Exact €/kWh will be set by retailers; the state requires a “reasonable compensation” (not negative). Expect variations by supplier.

  2. H2 2026: Tune battery size (2.4–2.88 kWh units stackable) and schedules for your tariff.

  3. From 2027: Prioritize self-use routines, automate with EMS/Modbus, review supplier export rates quarterly.
